Faculty & Staff Information

Helping You Support Students

Student Care staff within the Office of the Dean of Students can help you to support our students. Together we can create a welcoming and caring environment at OSU.

Faculty and Staff Resources

OSU has various resources available to assist faculty and staff members with student-related concerns.

As someone who works directly with students on a daily basis, OSU faculty and staff are in a unique position to interact with students both inside and outside of the classroom. We encourage all community members to recognize someone struggling and respond. If you are concerned for a student or need to consult on what to do next, Student Care staff within the Office of the Dean of Students would be glad to connect with you. Please contact us at (541) 737-8748 or through the Student Care Inquiry Form

Reporting Incidents

Anyone may report a concern about an OSU student. There are a number of different reporting options for different topics.

Crisis resources are here.

Crisis resources are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year.

Emergency Notification Process for Faculty

When a student is unable to contact instructors about an absence because of an extenuating circumstance, the Office of the Dean of Students may send an emergency notification by e-mail to instructors. A copy is also sent to the student and their academic advisor.

An Emergency Notification Is:

  • An e-mail notification from the Office of the Dean of Students to a student's faculty members and academic advisers that is sent to the student, as well.

  • An announcement of an emergency situation that has taken a student away from campus/classes (their own hospitalization, assault, accident, death in the family, etc.).

  • A source of information for you so you can anticipate the absence and, sometimes, if/when you can expect the student to return to class.

  • A written reminder for students that they should work with you to figure out how they will proceed in your course given their absence.

An Emergency Notification Is Not:

  • A notification for non-emergency situations (car problems, planned absences, minor illnesses, a past absence).

  • A requirement for students. If a student notifies you that they are in an emergency situation, you can work out the details with them and do not need to involve our office.

Office Of The Dean Of Students Staff Does:

  • Ask for some details from the person requesting the emergency notification so we can assess the situation and offer advice about what should be done to make the student's transition back to class easier.

  • Often follow up with students after the emergency notification process. Knowing their situation can help us tailor our follow-up, get them the help they need, and help them be better prepared to re-enter your class.

Office of The Dean of Students Staff Does Not:

  • Investigate when we receive requests to send out emergency notifications; we do not contact hospitals, doctors, or family members to assess the validity of an absence.

  • Serve as a proxy between the student and their faculty throughout their absence to identify assignments and class expectations that need to be met.

When the Student Returns to Class:

  • We recognize that you have the academic freedom to make decisions about absences and how they will affect a student's grade. However, please keep in mind that students who utilize the emergency notification service are typically recovering from a crisis and would benefit from your flexibility.

The Student Care Team

OSU has a university-wide Care Team that may be used in the Student Care process. The Student Care Team (SCT) collaborates when there are multiple issues impeding a student's success or a concern about an event that has negatively impacted the OSU community at large. The SCT is a collaborative interdisciplinary team of campus community members that meets weekly to discuss students exhibiting behaviors indicative of crisis and elevated concern.

As a result of growing safety issues and concerns on college campuses, Oregon State University developed a Student Care Team (SCT).  The goal of the SCT is to promote the safety and health of students which, in turn, aids in the well-being of our overall OSU community. The SCT consists of a group of qualified and dedicated OSU professionals who collaborate together as they focus on:

  • Eliminating fragmented care and information

  • Providing a structured method for addressing student needs and behaviors that impact the university community

  • Balancing the individual needs of the student and those of the greater campus community

  • Initiating appropriate intervention and resource connections

The Student Care Team is comprised of representatives from:
